You may feel a little awkward the first time you use an interpreter, so here are some tips
to make the experience go smoothly:
- Make eye contact with and speak directly to the person who is deaf, even though
that person is looking at the interpreter to ‘hear’ what you are saying. Avoid
saying: “Tell him…” or “Ask her...” Hand things directly to the person and not to
the interpreter.
- Remember that when the interpreter speaks, he/she is voicing the words of the
deaf individual. The interpreter is not a participant in this interaction. Respond
directly to the deaf person.
- Position yourself so the deaf individual can clearly see your face and mouth. The
interpreter should be positioned next to you, so you and the interpreter are both
within the same line of sight. It is a good practice to ask the deaf individual
where best to position the interpreter.
- Speak at your normal rate. If you are speaking too fast, the interpreter will let you
know.
- Be aware of visual obstructions, such as glare, and audio interference, such as
loud music.
- In a group meeting, only one person should speak at a time, to avoid confusing
the deaf individual and the interpreter. If everyone is talking at once, or if there
are several side conversations, the interpreter will not know which speaker to
interpret.
- Understand that in group meetings there may be a time lag between the spoken
word and the signed interpretation, making it difficult for a deaf participant to
jump into the conversation.
- Keep in mind that the deaf individual needs time to read written materials and
cannot watch the interpreter while reading. Anything spoken while he/she is
reading will be missed.
- Avoid conversing with the interpreter while he/she is on duty.
-
Remember that the interpreter will sign everything voiced and voice everything
signed. If you don’t want something seen or heard, don’t say it or sign it.
